What is Thyroid ?

A butterfly-shaped organ, the thyroid wraps around the windpipe in front of the neck. It has two broad wings on either side of the throat and is smaller in the center. Throughout your body, glands produce hormones that help regulate a variety of vital functions.

Unbalanced thyroid condition can occur if your thyroid does not work properly. There are two main types of thyroid disease: hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Both conditions can be caused by other diseases that impact the way the thyroid gland works.

What are Thyroid Disorders?

Thyroid disorders are conditions that affect the thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped gland in the front of the neck. The thyroid has an important role to regulate numerous metabolic processes throughout the body.

Thyroid disease is a common problem that can cause symptoms because of over- or under-function of the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is an essential organ for producing thyroid hormones, which maintain are body metabolism.

Thyroid problems include:

  • Goiter - Enlargement of the thyroid gland
  • Hyperthyroidism - When your thyroid gland makes more thyroid hormones than your body needs
  • Hypothyroidism - when your thyroid gland does not make enough thyroid hormones
  • Thyroid cancer
  • Thyroid nodules - lumps in the thyroid gland
  • Thyroiditis - swelling of the thyroid

Types of Thyriod

Overactive Thyroid (hyperthyroidism)

An excessive amount of the hormone thyroxine is produced by the thyroid gland in hyperthyroidism. A thyroidectomy may be a good option if you are having problems with anti-thyroid drugs and don't want radioactive iodine therapy.Hyperthyroidism is caused by too much thyroid hormone being produced by the thyroid gland. Overactive thyroid is another name for this condition. A hyperthyroid person's metabolism speeds up. Weight loss, hand tremors, and rapid or irregular heartbeats are some of the symptoms of this condition.

Underactive Thyroid (hypothyroidism)

The thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. Underactive thyroid is also called this condition. It is possible for hypothyroidism to cause no noticeable symptoms at the beginning of its development.

Symptoms:

Symptoms of an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) can include:

  • Feeling tired (fatigue).
  • Gaining weight
  • Experiencing forgetfulness.
  • Having frequent and heavy menstrual periods
  • Having dry and coarse hair.

Goiter

A goiter is an enlargement of the thyroid gland regardless of its cause. Goiter is not a disease in itself, but an indication of an underlying problem such as hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, or an abnormality of the thyroid gland.

Thyroid nodules

Tumors or cysts in the thyroid gland can cause nodules or abnormal lumps, or sometimes thyroid cancer can cause them. Nodules can be small or large, single or multiple. Large thyroid nodules can even compress structures like the windpipe (trachea)

Thyroid cancer

In elderly women, thyroid cancer is more common than in men. There is generally no cure for thyroid cancer. Most patients survive if detected early.

What Are The Main Causes Of Thyroid?

  • Iodine deficiency.
  • An autoimmune disease is one in which your immune system attacks your own body, resulting in either hyperthyroidism caused by Graves' disease or hypothyroidism caused by Hashimoto's disease.
  • A virus or bacteria irritates the thyroid (with or without aching).
